Vintage Robert Mouseman Thompson Oak Refectory Dining Table with Carved Top by Martin Wenham, L213

Vintage Robert Mouseman Thompson Oak Refectory Dining Table with Carved Top by Martin Wenham, L213

A striking and highly individual vintage English oak 7′ (TA04) refectory dining table, attributed to the workshop tradition of Robert Thompson, with an exceptional carved top by noted craftsman Martin Wenham.

The substantial solid oak top has been hand-adzed, creating a beautifully tactile, rippled surface that catches the light with depth and movement. At its centre sits a rare and artistic cruciform carved inscription, reading:

Heavenly Father, Be our Guest; Our morning joy, our evening rest; And with our daily bread impart Thy love and peace to every heart

A deeply evocative and spiritual motif, elevating the piece beyond functional furniture into the realm of folk art and devotional craftsmanship.

The table stands on robust octagonal supports terminating in traditional sledge feet, united by a stretcher for strength and stability. The classic refectory form synonymous with the Mouseman workshop. Notably, one leg bears the iconic carved mouse signature, confirming its connection to the Kilburn tradition.

The carved decoration is attributed to Martin Wenham, a skilled woodcarver known for producing bespoke and often symbolic commissions, frequently working in collaboration with established furniture traditions. Pieces combining Mouseman construction with independent artisan carving are scarce, making this table particularly distinctive.

A true statement dining table, comfortably seating 8–10 guests, ideal for a country house kitchen, farmhouse interior, or design-led space seeking authenticity and narrative.

Who is Martin Wenham?

Martin Wenham is a British woodcarver associated with bespoke and commissioned decorative carving, often applied to traditional oak furniture forms. While not as widely documented as factory-based makers like Robert Thompson, Wenham’s work appears on unique, one-off pieces where artistic carving takes precedence over standard production.

His carvings are typically:

  • Hand-cut rather than machine worked
  • Symbolic or text-based (as seen here)
  • Applied to high-quality traditional furniture
  • Produced in small numbers or as individual commissions

In this context, Wenham’s contribution transforms a classic Mouseman-style table into a one-of-a-kind artwork, rather than a standard workshop piece.
