A highly decorative late Victorian japanned tripod occasional table, dating to c.1880 and bearing the original maker’s label for Simkin, Cabinet Maker & Upholsterer of Colchester. This elegant snap-top table features a circular top richly decorated with hand-painted floral still-life motifs, framed within a scrolling gilt border against a deep black japanned ground. The snap-top mechanism allows the top to tilt vertically when not in use, making it both practical and visually engaging. The turned central column is enriched with gilt banding and rises from a graceful tripod base, each leg subtly curved and further embellished with gilt foliate decoration. With its refined proportions, strong decorative presence and identifiable maker, this table is an excellent example of late Victorian taste, equally suited to use as a lamp table, wine table, or occasional accent piece in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
