Vintage Large Empire Revival French Mahogany Desk / Library Table / Bureau Plat, c.1900

Ref: 2181

A striking and generously proportioned French Empire Revival bureau plat, crafted in richly figured mahogany with an oak carcass, displaying the confident symmetry and classical detailing synonymous with the style. The rectangular top is fitted with a deep green inset baize writing surface, bordered by an elegant gilt Greek-key trim, providing both visual contrast and practical workspace.

The frieze houses three drawers, each fitted with finely cast gilt metal ring pulls and a central ornate escutcheon, all retaining excellent colour and crisp detail. The whole is raised on substantial parcel-fluted supports, enriched with extensive gilt metal mounts and terminating in bold zoomorphic claw feet—an unmistakable Empire Revival flourish that gives the table real architectural presence.

Exceptionally solid and heavy, this is a serious piece of library or study furniture, equally suited to use as a writing desk, centre table, or statement console in a grand interior. The warm mahogany tones, original decorative mounts, and well-proportioned scale make it an ideal choice for period homes, country houses, or refined contemporary settings seeking classical gravitas.
