An impressive late Victorian mahogany hall coat stand, dating to circa 1890, featuring an intricately turned central column, six decorative brass lion mask coat hooks and an elegant tripod cabriole leg base.

Standing at an impressive 185 cm tall, this freestanding hall stand combines traditional Victorian craftsmanship with an unusual and highly decorative arrangement of brass fittings.

The circular upper section features six substantial double coat hooks, each ornamented with a finely detailed lion mask. The expressive lion faces, flowing manes and elongated upper hooks create a particularly striking decorative feature, while the lower hooks terminate in distinctive paw-shaped ends.

The brass fittings display an attractive aged patina, with warm golden highlights and darker areas of natural oxidation, providing a pleasing contrast against the rich mahogany.

Beneath the coat hooks, the beautifully turned central column incorporates a series of decorative mouldings and a substantial plain section, leading to an intricately worked barley-twist-style reeded section towards the lower half.

The stand is supported by three gracefully sweeping cabriole legs, each terminating in a gently shaped foot. Their elegant curves provide a pleasing contrast to the vertical proportions of the central column.

The mahogany displays a warm reddish-brown colour with attractive grain, subtle variations in tone and a pleasing depth of finish.

Both practical and decorative, this substantial Victorian coat stand would make an excellent addition to a traditional entrance hall, country house, period townhouse or boutique hotel.
