Antique Victorian Bamboo Chinoiserie Aesthetic Movement Stick & Umbrella Hall Stand, c.1880

Antique Victorian Bamboo Chinoiserie Aesthetic Movement Stick & Umbrella Hall Stand, c.1880

An exceptionally decorative Victorian bamboo hall stand dating to around 1880, beautifully combining the elegance of the Aesthetic Movement with fashionable Anglo-Japanese and Chinoiserie influences that became immensely popular during the late nineteenth century.

Crafted from richly patinated bamboo with naturally contrasting markings, this unusual umbrella stand features an architectural pagoda-inspired pediment, centred by an original hand-painted ceramic floral tile set on the diagonal. Delicate bamboo stretchers create geometric cross bracing to the sides and rear, while the open framework was designed to accommodate walking sticks, umbrellas and canes within a grand Victorian hallway.

The piece displays the restrained elegance synonymous with the Aesthetic Movement, where Japanese-inspired design, simplicity of form and natural materials replaced the heavier ornamentation of earlier Victorian furniture. The warm honey tones of the bamboo, together with the decorative ceramic tile, create a wonderfully authentic period appearance that is equally at home in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

A highly collectable example of Victorian bamboo furniture, this hall stand would make a striking statement in an entrance hall, conservatory, orangery or country house, whilst also appealing to collectors of Chinoiserie, Anglo-Japanese design and Aesthetic Movement furniture.

A rare surviving example offering both decorative charm and practical functionality.
