Antique Edwardian Maple & Co Walnut Twin Pedestal Desk Dressing Table, c.1900

A fine quality antique Edwardian walnut twin pedestal desk or dressing table by the renowned London cabinetmakers Maple & Co, dating to circa 1900.

Of particularly useful proportions, the desk features a broad rectangular walnut top with moulded edge, displaying an attractive warm colour and figuring. Beneath is a traditional twin-pedestal arrangement providing an excellent amount of storage whilst retaining a generous central kneehole.

The central frieze drawer is flanked by further drawers to either side, with three graduated drawers arranged beneath each pedestal. The drawer fronts are finished with moulded edges and fitted with decorative brass swing handles and escutcheons, complementing the warm walnut beautifully.

An especially attractive feature is the carved decoration surrounding the kneehole, with shaped arched brackets incorporating stylised foliate carving and small scroll terminals. These details, together with the finely turned lower legs and original-style castors, give the piece an elegant late Victorian to Edwardian character.

Importantly, the drawer is clearly stamped “MAPLE & CO.”, identifying the piece as the work of one of Britain’s best-known furniture and furnishing firms. Maple & Co of Tottenham Court Road, London, supplied high-quality furniture to wealthy domestic and international clients and became one of the most important British furnishing houses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A highly practical piece that could be used equally well as a writing desk, home office desk or substantial bedroom dressing table, combining excellent storage with the added desirability of a documented maker.
