Antique Mahogany Arts and Crafts Red Leather Chair Attributed to Charles Bevan for Gillows, c.1880
A rare and distinctive Antique Mahogany Arts and Crafts Chair, attributed to Charles Bevan for Gillows, circa 1880. Constructed from rich solid mahogany, this design encapsulates Bevan’s refined architectural aesthetic and the craftsmanship synonymous with the Gillows workshops. The chair features a gently curved backrest with intricate geometric carvings and circular motifs, a hallmark of the high Victorian Arts and Crafts movement.
The seat is traditionally reupholstered in deep red leather with brass stud detailing, providing a bold contrast to the warm tone of the mahogany. Tapered and turned front legs balance elegantly with slightly splayed rears, ensuring both stability and visual grace. This piece would have originally graced a library, study, or drawing room, yet today makes a striking and sculptural occasional or desk chair — a true statement of English design heritage.
