Description

A wonderfully characterful mid-Victorian Lincolnshire scumbled pine dresser base / housekeeper’s storage cupboard, dating to circa 1860. This is a particularly appealing piece of vernacular country furniture, combining practical domestic construction with a warm, time-worn decorative surface.

The cupboard has a pleasing low, broad form, measuring 121 cm wide, with a substantial planked top projecting slightly over the carcass and softened along its front edge. Beneath, the façade is divided asymmetrically into three graduated drawers to the left and a large shelved cupboard to the right, a classic utilitarian arrangement providing both drawer and general household storage.

The three drawers retain attractive decorative brass swing handles with shaped backplates, while the cupboard door has a particularly attractive shaped and fielded central panel. It retains its brass escutcheon together with a working lock and key. Opening the door reveals a capacious interior divided by a single shelf.

What makes this piece especially interesting is its scumbled finish. Scumbling was widely employed during the 19th century as a decorative technique whereby inexpensive native softwood — commonly pine or deal — was painted, stained or combed to imitate the richer colour and appearance of more expensive hardwoods. On surviving pieces, decades of handling and polishing often mellow the original decoration into the wonderfully varied brown surface seen here.

The finish on this cupboard has developed considerable character. Areas of wear expose variations beneath the surface, particularly across the top, drawer fronts and cupboard door, while the numerous knocks, scratches and changes in colour speak clearly of its long working life. Rather than detracting from the piece, these marks are an important part of its country-house and vernacular appeal.

Its construction is equally evocative. The broad boarded back, simple internal shelving, straightforward joinery and substantial pine carcass are typical of furniture intended primarily for usefulness rather than fashionable display. This was the sort of furniture that could have served in a farmhouse kitchen, housekeeper’s room, pantry, dairy or estate service area, storing linens, utensils, provisions and other household necessities.

The attribution to Lincolnshire is particularly appropriate for this form of regional vernacular furniture. The relatively restrained construction, generous storage and decorative treatment of otherwise inexpensive pine are characteristic of provincial furniture produced for working households throughout the East Midlands during the Victorian period.

Today it would make an excellent low kitchen dresser, sideboard, hallway cupboard, television cabinet or boot-room storage piece. At only 788 mm high it would also work particularly well beneath a window or as the base beneath a collection of pictures, pottery or kitchenware.

A highly usable piece of genuine Victorian country furniture with tremendous warmth and character.

Condition

Good antique condition commensurate with approximately 165 years of age and domestic use. There are numerous historic knocks, scratches, abrasions, colour variations and areas of wear to the scumbled surface, particularly across the top and working areas.

The timber shows expected historic shrinkage and movement. The boarded back and interior retain an appropriately utilitarian appearance. The brass drawer furniture shows attractive age and patination.
