A wonderfully characterful harlequin set of eight antique Late Victorian painted pine kitchen dining chairs, circa 1890, brought together by their fabulous collection of old green painted surfaces and beautifully worn country-house appearance.

Rather than being a formally matched set, these chairs comprise eight individual late 19th-century vernacular kitchen chairs of related character, making them a genuine harlequin collection. Variations in the back designs, turnings, proportions and construction are very much part of their appeal. Seen together around a large farmhouse or kitchen table, the differences give the group an informal, collected-over-generations quality that is extremely difficult to reproduce convincingly with modern furniture.

The real attraction, however, is the paint. The chairs display an exceptional variety of old greens: apple, sage, pea, olive, blue-green and deeper bottle-green tones, with areas of earlier paint showing through beneath. Years of use have naturally rubbed the surfaces along seat edges, rails, legs and backs, exposing underlying layers and occasional glimpses of the pine beneath.

This naturally distressed surface gives the chairs tremendous decorative presence. It is precisely the sort of untouched, time-worn painted finish sought after for relaxed English country-house, farmhouse and rustic interiors. We would strongly resist the temptation to repaint or over-restore them; their knocks, rubbing, flaking and variation are fundamental to their charm.

Construction varies across the group, although the chairs share the straightforward, practical character associated with Victorian kitchen and cottage furniture. Several have attractive spindle backs, others more architectural ladder and slatted arrangements, while some incorporate modest turned decoration to the front legs. The solid timber seats and stretchered bases reflect their origins as functional everyday furniture rather than formal dining-room chairs.

During the later Victorian period, inexpensive pine and other softwood chairs of this type were commonplace in kitchens, servants’ halls, cottages, farmhouses, schools and other working interiors. Unlike polished mahogany or walnut dining furniture intended for the parlour, these chairs were designed to be practical, repairable and repeatedly painted. Their surviving layers of colour can therefore become something of a visual record of their long working lives.

Today, a set like this has enormous decorative versatility. They would be superb surrounding a scrubbed pine farmhouse table, refectory table or large country kitchen table, particularly in an interior where a perfectly matched set might appear too formal.
