Antique Georgian Mahogany Bedside Cupboard Nightstand Tambour Table, c1800

A charming antique Georgian mahogany bedside cupboard, dating to circa 1800, featuring an attractive tambour-fronted compartment, a generously proportioned lower dummy drawer and a beautifully aged, warm mahogany patina.

This elegant and practical piece of late Georgian furniture retains the understated sophistication and functional craftsmanship associated with English cabinetmaking of the period. Its compact proportions and clean architectural lines make it particularly suitable for use as a bedside nightstand, occasional cabinet or decorative storage piece.

The rectangular top features a raised gallery to three sides, incorporating shaped corner details and an elongated carrying aperture to the rear. The beautifully figured mahogany surface displays a rich honey-brown colour, with attractive grain patterns and natural variations in tone that have developed over generations of use.

Beneath the gallery sits a distinctive vertically reeded tambour-fronted cupboard, operated by small decorative brass knobs. The sliding tambour mechanism provides access to a useful interior storage compartment while allowing the cabinet to retain its neat, compact appearance. This ingenious arrangement reflects the practical innovation of Georgian furniture design, where discreet storage and elegant proportions were highly valued.

The cupboard stands upon four square-section legs, creating a simple yet elegant silhouette. The restrained design, combined with its distinctive tambour construction and original-style brass fittings, gives the piece considerable decorative appeal.

Originally conceived as a Georgian bedside convenience cupboard, this versatile antique would work equally well in a traditional bedroom, country house guest suite or contemporary interior, where its compact dimensions and warm timber tones would introduce a wonderful sense of history and character.

An attractive and increasingly sought-after example of late Georgian domestic furniture, combining period charm, practical storage and timeless English design.

Condition: Presented in good antique condition, displaying a wonderfully warm, established patina with historic marks, minor surface wear and natural variations in colour consistent with its age and use. The mahogany retains attractive figuring throughout, while the brass fittings provide a pleasing decorative contrast.
