Antique George III Mahogany Tripod Wine Table with Gallery Dished Top, c1800

An elegant George III mahogany tripod wine table, dating to circa 1800, featuring a generously proportioned circular dished top, raised gallery edge and beautifully shaped tripod pedestal base.

The circular mahogany top measures approximately 605 mm or 23.8 inches in diameter and is surrounded by a moulded raised gallery. The broad surface has acquired a particularly attractive reddish-brown colour, displaying historic scratches, marks and variations in tone that give the piece an established country house appearance.

Supporting the top is an elegant turned mahogany pedestal incorporating a tapering vase-shaped column with restrained ring-turned decoration. The column terminates in a classic Georgian tripod base comprising three sweeping cabriole legs terminating in elongated pad feet.

The combination of the relatively broad top and delicate pedestal gives the table particularly pleasing proportions when viewed from across a room.

Tables of this type were versatile pieces of Georgian furniture, easily moved around a drawing room or dining room as required. Today it would work beautifully as a wine table, lamp table, occasional table, side table or small centre table.

At approximately 29.5 inches high, this is taller than many small Georgian wine tables, while the nearly 24-inch diameter top offers considerably more usable surface area than the smaller examples commonly encountered.

Of particular appeal is the surface itself. Rather than having been stripped or excessively refinished, the mahogany retains the marks and mellow colour associated with generations of use. These signs of age contribute significantly to its decorative character.

A very attractive and practical piece of late Georgian furniture with excellent proportions, rich colour and an appealing period surface.

Condition: Good antique condition with historic marks, scratches, colour variation and surface wear consistent with age and use. There is visible historic wear and minor loss around areas of the moulded gallery edge. These features contribute to the established appearance and character of the table. Presents well and is ready for continued use.

Dimensions: Height 749 mm / 29.5 in; diameter 605 mm / 23.8 in.
