Antique French Art Nouveau Gilt Wall Mirror, c.1890

An exceptional late nineteenth-century French Art Nouveau gilt wall mirror, richly decorated with flowing naturalistic ornament and retaining all the elegance and craftsmanship that defined the movement at its height. Dating from around 1890, this striking mirror features a large rectangular bevelled mirror plate enclosed within an intricately carved giltwood frame adorned with flowering water lilies, trailing foliage, and sinuous organic forms.

The magnificent cresting is particularly noteworthy, incorporating stylised water lily blooms and scrolling stems that appear to grow naturally from the frame, perfectly embodying the Art Nouveau fascination with nature and fluid movement. The frame itself is lavishly decorated with repeating floral motifs and botanical detailing, creating a sense of harmony and rhythm throughout the design.

Likely originating from either France or Belgium, the mirror reflects the influence of designers such as Hector Guimard and the broader European Art Nouveau movement, where craftsmanship, artistry and nature combined to create some of the most visually striking decorative objects of the period. The generous bevelled plate enhances light and space within a room while providing a practical focal point.

Perfect above a fireplace, console table, dressing area, or within a grand hallway, this impressive mirror offers both decorative impact and timeless sophistication. Its scale, quality of carving, and beautifully aged gilt finish make it a highly desirable statement piece for collectors, interior designers, and period home enthusiasts alike.
