A rare and highly decorative Chinese Yumu elm money chest dating from the late Qing Dynasty period, circa 1900. Traditionally used in Northern China as a secure family strongbox for storing documents, silver ingots, account books and other valuables, these substantial chests were often found in prosperous merchant households and were designed to provide both security and portability.

Crafted from solid Chinese elm (Yumu), the chest displays a beautiful honey-golden colour with striking grain patterns throughout. The front is particularly impressive, featuring twin cupboard doors secured by an original iron lock plate, sliding bolt mechanism and traditional pendant lock escutcheons. The doors retain their original oversized strap hinges, while the upper section features two stay hinged lids allowing access to the divided storage compartments within.

The interior remains remarkably original with its beige toned finish still present, highlighting the chest’s authentic character and craftsmanship. The robust construction, thick elm timbers and reinforced iron fittings reflect the practical requirements of a piece intended to safeguard a family’s most important possessions.

Today, original Yumu money chests are highly sought after by collectors, interior designers and enthusiasts of Asian antiques.
