Antique Arts and Crafts Edwardian Glasgow School Tall Narrow Glazed Bookcase Cupboard, Attributed to Wylie & Lochhead, c.1890

An exceptional Arts and Crafts glazed bookcase cupboard attributed to the celebrated Glasgow makers Wylie & Lochhead, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, circa 1890. Beautifully proportioned and unusually narrow in form, this impressive cabinet embodies the refined simplicity and outstanding craftsmanship that established Glasgow as one of the most important centres of the British Arts and Crafts movement.

Constructed in richly figured quarter-sawn oak throughout, the cabinet displays a wonderfully warm colour and striking grain pattern. The upper section features a pair of glazed doors with characteristic geometric glazing bars, opening to reveal adjustable shelving ideal for displaying books, ceramics, or collections. Below, a second set of glazed cupboard doors provides additional enclosed storage whilst maintaining the elegant architectural balance of the piece.

Particularly noteworthy is the bold overhanging cornice supported by a series of shaped corbels, a design element strongly associated with Glasgow School furniture. The clean vertical lines, restrained decoration, and emphasis on superior timber selection perfectly reflect the philosophy championed by leading designers such as E.A. Taylor and the wider Glasgow movement alongside Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Wylie & Lochhead were among Scotland’s foremost cabinet makers, exhibiting internationally and producing furniture of such quality that it stood alongside the finest Arts and Crafts designs of the period. Their work is increasingly sought after by collectors, interior designers, and enthusiasts of Glasgow School furniture.

Presented in excellent condition with superb original colour and patination throughout, this is a rare and highly desirable example of Scottish Arts and Crafts furniture.

Market Commentary

Furniture attributed to Wylie & Lochhead remains among the most desirable of all Scottish Arts and Crafts makers. The combination of outstanding craftsmanship, Glasgow School design influence, original condition, and practical proportions make this an increasingly scarce offering in today’s market, particularly appealing to collectors of Arts & Crafts furniture and interior designers seeking authentic period pieces with strong architectural presence.
