Antique 18th Century French Chestnut Double Larder Cupboard, c.1780

Antique 18th Century French Chestnut Double Larder Cupboard, c.1780

A superb and highly characterful 18th century French double larder cupboard, dating to circa 1780 and constructed in solid chestnut. This impressive provincial piece features four panelled doors arranged over two tiers, retaining its original hand-forged iron hinges, escutcheons, and working hardware throughout.

The cupboard displays classic French country craftsmanship, with deeply moulded panels, a substantial cornice, and a robust framed construction. Internally, the piece offers generous storage across two compartments, traditionally used for food storage, linens, or household provisions, making it as practical today as it was over two centuries ago. Further shelves and/or rails can be added.

The chestnut has developed a rich, warm patina with beautiful tonal variation, surface wear, and historic marks that reflect its age and use. The original ironwork adds further authenticity and visual interest, reinforcing the rustic, honest appeal of this period cupboard.

Its proportions make it a commanding yet versatile piece, ideal for use as a kitchen pantry, housekeeper’s cupboard, or statement storage within a farmhouse, country house, or contemporary interior seeking texture and history.

A genuine and increasingly sought-after example of 18th century French provincial furniture, offering both scale and authenticity.
