A wonderfully characterful Victorian pine glazed hanging pantry cupboard, dating to circa 1870 and retaining the simple, practical construction associated with 19th-century English country and farmhouse furniture.

Constructed principally from pine, the cupboard has a pleasingly wide, low profile with a moulded cornice and base. The front is fitted with two large glazed doors, each retaining a simple white ceramic knob and opening to reveal a useful shelved interior. Particularly attractive is the surviving old red painted finish to the interior, providing a lovely contrast against the stripped and naturally aged pine exterior.

The boarded pine back, straightforward joinery and utilitarian proportions are typical of cupboards originally made for practical household storage. It would most likely have been used in a pantry, kitchen or scullery for storing food, crockery and everyday provisions.

At just over 110 cm wide and only 33 cm deep, it is an exceptionally useful piece for a modern kitchen where floor space is limited. It could be wall-mounted as originally intended or incorporated into a freestanding kitchen scheme.

A genuine piece of Victorian vernacular furniture with plenty of age, wear and country-house character.
